Morningside Heights
Loosely bounded by West 110th Street and West 125th Street, Morningside
Heights sits between Morningside Park on the east and the Hudson River
on the west.
Columbia University, which was originally located downtown near City Hall, extends from 114th to 120th Streets. It is one of the top-ranked ivy-league universities in the nation and offers various types of cultural events. South of Columbia is the still unfinished Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine at Amsterdam Avenue and 112th Street. Started in 1892 it is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. The cathedral has many artists in residence and presents concerts, plays, dance and art shows often.
Riverside Church, also a host to cultural events, located at 490 Riverside
Drive, is home to the 74-bell Rockefeller Memorial Carillon. The carillon's
20-ton bell is the world's largest. The 392-foot tower provides an observatory
that overlooks the region. These monumental structures serve as a
magnificent backdrop to the numerous attractive apartment buildings in this
culturally charged neighborhood .
