August, 2004 >> return to MAI in the news MEET THE BROKER
HIGLIGHTED AGENT: CHIN-TOSTES: It is absolutely booming. People are buying left and right and taking advantage of low interest rates. Chinese people traditionally like to invest, especially in real estate. AM NY: Can you tell us the primary attraction of the area? CHIN-TOSTES: The Seaport is really unique, one of the last neighborhoods that is really undiscovered. People don't understand its right here and so close to everything. AM NY: What types of people are looking to move to Chinatown ? CHIN-TOSTES: In Chinatown it is mostly Chinese. They would like to buy in Chinatown but really nobody is selling. The philosophy is buy and keep. Only once in awhile does a building go on sale. AM NY: Will the fish market move affect rent? CHIN-TOSTES: It's very possible, especially in the long run. But for awhile, construction of new buildings and renovations of the fish market buildings could keep prices down. AM NY: What's the appeal of the neighborhood? CHIN-TOSTES: For Chinese people it's the convenience. They speak the language and know the food – it's comfortable. But they are also very welcoming to American people who want to move into the area. Chinatown has expanded so much it has reached down to Orchard and Allen. Little Italy is shrinking. Chinese people are buying properties. Mulberry used to be part of little Italy but now the Chinese people are taking over. There are a lot of people still migrating to the U.S. from China , and because of the language barrier they settle in Chinatown . AM NY: What about the gang wars of the past? CHIN-TOSTES: It's much safer now than before. Much more under control. The Chinese people wanted to keep it safe for their own children. AM NY: What kind of people do you advise to move to Chinatown? CHIN-TOSTES: It's a good area for anyone to move. In Chinatown you see all different cultures. There are holiday celebrations, dragon dances, great shopping and food. Fresh seafood here is one quarter of price anywhere else in the city. |
